Samsung’s Galaxy M series deserves much credit for re-establishing the South Korean giant to the top spot after a brief drop in market share in 2018. The strategy of targeting Millennials with one M series phones off the retail shelves has worked well so far. Continuing this plan, Samsung Galaxy M12 was recently introduced in the Indian market.

Samsung has priced the Galaxy M12 base variant with 4GB RAM + 64GB storage at Rs 10,999 while its higher specced version featuring 6GB RAM+128GB version retails for Rs 13,499. At these price tags, it will have to compete with strong contenders from Xiaomi, Motorola, and Realme. Will the Galaxy M12 be able to take on the competition head-on? Well, that requires a thorough assessment. Let’s detail our experience in our Samsung Galaxy M12 review.

Samsung has priced the Galaxy M12 in its higher variant with 6GB RAM + 128GB version at Rs 13,499. While the base variant with 4GB RAM + 64GB storage is priced at Rs 10,999, at these price tags it will have to compete with strong contenders from Xiaomi, Motorola, vivo and Realme. Will the Galaxy M12 be able to compete with the rest of the phones? Well, it also requires a thorough evaluation. Let’s go through our experiences in detail in our Samsung Galaxy M12 review.

Samsung Galaxy M12 Unboxing

You will be greeted by phone as soon as you cut the side tape of the box and open the box. As soon as you take the phone out of the box, you will find the cable and charging brick inside. Apart from this, a SIM ejector tool will also be available in the box, it also includes a quick start guide, warranty card and user manual.

Samsung Galaxy M12 Design and Build Quality

First of all we talk about the beauty of Galaxy M12. Like most Samsung phones, the Galaxy M12 sports an attractive design. There will not be much need to think about the design, it also has a smudge-resistant, dual-tone finish on the back panel. The bulk of the phone is covered in fine vertical lines followed by a plain matte finish with the Samsung company logo engraved on it.

In the Samsung Galaxy M12, mainly plastic has been used for the back panel. The all-in approach isn’t in line with current trends either, but Samsung scores extremely well on implementation as it manages to ensure a distinctive look and excellent in-hand feel. There is also a square shaped enclosure at the back of the phone which houses a quad rear camera which protrudes slightly and comfortably blends in with the overall design of the phone.

The fingerprint sensor is given in the power button which is responsive and also unlocks the phone quickly. The volume button also offers good tactile feedback but reaching that would also require adjusting your grip on the phone.

The Samsung Galaxy M12 phone has wide bezels around the screen and a water drop on the front. The overall footprint of the Samsung Galaxy M12 phone is quite large and thanks to the huge battery inside, it weighs 221 grams. However, Samsung has done well with the distribution of weight as the phone feels comfortable to hold and operate.

Samsung Galaxy M12 Display

Samsung Galaxy M12 highlights include a screen with a high refresh rate. The budget phone from Samsung comes with a 6.5-inch HD+ (720 x 1,600) 90Hz adaptive refresh rate. While it may not have FHD+ resolution like Redmi or Realme, it will appeal to customers who want to experience 90Hz screen on a budget. Since this is an adaptive panel, it will also adjust the refresh rate based on the screen content.

It has worked more or less as advertised during our review testing except for a few occasional jerks when switching between apps or switching from app to home screen. In some segments, Samsung has locked the refresh rate at 60Hz.

Apart from this, there is absolutely no legibility concern in the Samsung Galaxy M12 display. It gets bright enough but images lack the sharpness that you’d get from an FHD+ panel. If you’ve used Samsung’s AMOLED screen, you might find the Samsung Galaxy M12 color muted a bit, but if you’re upgrading from another TFT or LCD screen phone, in that case, you can get the color reproduction on the M12. will be quite satisfied with it.

Samsung Galaxy M12 camera review

Samsung follows the prevalent trend of stacking quad-cameras on the back of the Galaxy M12. The company has given a 48MP primary sensor LED module with a 5MP secondary ultra-wide lens (123-degree field of view) and two 2MP sensors for macro and depth.

The phone’s primary camera captures a decent amount of detail in daylight and artificially. It is the low light scenario where you will be forced to look for the missing night mode as well. Samsung engineers have tuned the cameras to give a slightly warmer tone.

Broadly speaking, the photos won’t disappoint you but I was yearning for a slightly quicker focus speed. The 8MP ultra-wide sensor delivers the original result so does the other two 2MP sensors. You will also notice edge bending in ultrawide images while macro shots will lack details.

Samsung Galaxy M12 performance and software

If performance is really a thing when it comes to price, the Samsung Galaxy M12 more or less justifies its price tag. The latest M series phone is powered by Exynos 850 SoC – a new 8nm chipset from Samsung. It is paired with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal storage along with a microSD card slot that expands this phone up to 1TB. This set ensures that the Galaxy M12 performs like a budget phone. Its performance was adequate in day-to-day use but would face occasional lag and stutter while switching between apps. Except that it has run smoothly.

Gameplay is one area where you will be able to get a smooth experience only from the lower settings. As far as benchmarks are concerned, we ran the Geekbench 5 test on the M12 where it scored 171 and 1,004 in the single-core and multi-core tests.

Samsung Galaxy M12 runs on One UI Core 3.1 out-of-the-box based on version 11 of Android. Samsung has optimized its software according to the hardware of the M12. That’s why some key elements of OneUI are missing here. There is no Always On Display, there is no built-in screen recorder. That being said, you can still change the theme, use gestures, or Quick Share to share the file.

Samsung Galaxy M12 Battery

The Samsung Galaxy M12 packs a massive 6,000mAh battery. The combination of Exynos 850 chipset and HD+ screen ensures that you don’t have to worry about battery life throughout the day. The battery is very good given that even after heavy usage it is very difficult to get rid of it in a day. Unlike some Samsung flagships, the Galaxy M12 comes with a 15Watt wall charger that can fully charge the battery in two hours and thirty minutes.

Samsung Galaxy M12 Should you buy it?

Samsung Galaxy M12 has four key features – Refresh screen Stable Samsung branding A 90Hz A massive 6,000mAh battery and Android 11 software. If these features are what you value and prioritize, then the Galaxy M12 is a sensible budget option. The Exynos chipset has been developed for low-end devices and delivers decent performance as compared to other options in the same price segment. The primary rear sensor is the only reliable camera in the quad setup.
